Many adults who suffer with a bad bite face the decision of continuing to suffer with the malocclusion or walk around with a mouthful of metal and wire braces for a year or two. Traditional braces are just an unacceptable solution to a bite problem for many adults. Traditional braces are not the only solution for these malocclusion sufferers. Our Fifth Avenue Dental Associates practice can solve many bite problems without using wire braces by using the Fort Hamilton Invisalign System, which does not place any wire in the mouth.
The Fort Hamilton Invisalign System does not place any brackets or wires of any kind on the teeth. In fact, nothing is bonded directly onto the teeth. Instead Invisalign uses a series of plastic trays, called aligners to straighten teeth. Our doctors will first examine your teeth and bite and develop a plan to correct the occlusion, which they will discuss in great detail with the patient. If Invisalign is the treatment of choice our doctor will take a series of 3-D images of your mouth, which Invisalign will use to fabricate a series of aligners. Each aligner will be worn all day and night – it will only be taken out by the patient to eat and for tooth brushing. The patient will wear an aligner for two weeks and then replace it with the next aligner in the series until all the aligners have been used. Each aligner is designed to gently push the teeth a little more towards its proper position. There are generally between 13 – 48 aligners in the series depending on the patient’s individual case. Once all the aligners have been used the treatment is completed.
Fort Hamilton Invisalign has a couple of important advantages over traditional braces. The most obvious advantage is that Invisalign is not obvious. The clear plastic aligners fit snugly so that they are virtually invisible. No one can tell that you are in the middle of an orthodontic treatment when you smile. Another big advantage is that the aligners can be taken out to eat so the patient can eat anything without fear of ruining them, which is not the case with traditional braces that limit what can be eaten. Also being able to remove the aligners allows for much better tooth brushing and flossing. So if you need to correct a malocclusion but don’t want to wear traditional braces make an appointment with our office to see if Invisalign is right for you.
Cavities are all too common. These holes in your teeth are caused by tooth decay, which itself is the result of the effects of dental plaque and tartar. They can lead to a toothache, an infection inside the tooth, and either root canal or a tooth extraction. At Fifth Avenue Dental Associates, we’re pleased to offer a variety of filling materials to meet your needs and preferences in all instances.
Amalgam fillings are made of metal. At one time, they were the most common type, but the advancements in options like composite resins, porcelain, and ceramic, all of which are strong as well as cosmetically appealing, have relegated amalgam to being utilized less often. When they are used, it is typically for back teeth, where there added sturdiness can be a benefit when it comes to bearing up under the pressure of chewing. However, amalgam makes teeth more likely to fracture due to expansion and contraction of the metal. Composite bonds to your teeth much better than amalgam, and that means less drilling at our Fort Hamilton dental office, along with keeping more natural tooth material. Pretty much everyone likes it when the drill is absent. Porcelain and ceramic share the same kind of aesthetic advantages that are present with composite resins, but they can last longer than composite, which means you will be able to have the peace of mind to know that you don’t have to get further treatment until much later. No matter what type of material is most appropriate for your cavity, preventing further cavities is always a top priority. So be sure to come in for your examination and cleaning every six months.
Cavities, whether announcing themselves through a toothache, or detected during a routine checkup, need dental fillings. Contact our Fort Hamilton dental office right now and let us schedule your visit to come in.
Fort Hamilton extraction
The four wisdom teeth, or third molars as they are really known, are the last adult teeth to erupt and usually make their appearance between the ages of 17 – 24. Our dentist at Fifth Avenue Dental Associates often recommends that these final teeth be removed because they are causing problems for the patient and are threatening the other teeth in his mouth. Wisdom teeth should be removed by a Fort Hamilton extraction when they are causing a crowding of the mouth, are impacted, come in at an angle, causing adjacent teeth to shift, food is lodging behind them or are causing infections, pain or discomfort.
If one of the wisdom teeth is impacted or causing a problem many dentist recommend pulling all four. Many dentists argue that the four wisdom teeth should be pulled even if they are not causing any immediate problem just to prevent a problem from arising at a later date. Fort Hamilton extraction of the wisdom teeth is done through a simple outpatient surgical procedure. To extract a wisdom tooth our doctor will first numb the tooth using a local anesthetic, if the patient is uncomfortable with the local anesthetic sedation or even general anesthesia can be used to put the patient to sleep during the procedure, especially if all four molars are to be pulled. Once the area is numb our doctor will make a small incision in the gum to expose the tooth and bone and then the doctor will remove and bone that blocks access to the tooth’s roots. Generally, the doctor will then break the tooth up into several pieces, which are easier to remove than the whole tooth at once. After the tooth has been removed the site will be cleaned to make sure there is no debris left from the tooth or bone and the wound is closed using a few stitches.
Our Fort Hamilton extraction dentist gives each patient specific instruction for follow-up care after the surgery. Any post-operative pain should be relatively mild and controlled by the use of over-the-counter pain relievers. So, be smart and lose a little wisdom by having your third molars extracted whenever it becomes necessary.

Dyker Heights Dentist
A complete smile filled with whole, strong, great-looking teeth is everyone’s goal. And here at Fifth Avenue Dental Associates, we make it a priority to help you achieve it. And with crowns and bridges, there are a variety of applications that can be of use to you.
A crown is made out of porcelain or porcelain baked to metal or even ceramic. It is fastened to your existing tooth to augment it if it has been weakened by tooth decay. Or it can be used to cover a tooth that is aesthetically displeasing, such as when it is discolored, misshapen, chipped, or cracked. And after root canal therapy, for example, a crown will restore your tooth back to its full and functional size. Our Dyker Heights dentist will take impressions and send them to the dental lab, where your crown will be fashioned. It will then be cemented to your tooth. When you’re missing one or more teeth, a bridge, either a fixed or removable one (also called dentures), will give you back your full smile. You will be able to chew and speak with confidence. And with a fixed bridge, there is yet another use for crowns. The bridge, in addition to being cemented to your gums, is also attached to the neighboring tooth on either side. To do so, the teeth are filed down. Anchors are then added. And crowns are cemented over the anchors for a secure hold. Removable bridges do not require the loss of any nearby tooth material. Our Dyker Heights dentist can have you wearing your new bridge in about a month, start to finish.
Schedule an appointment to come in and see our Dyker Heights dentist for a crown or a bridge. Don’t settle for a less-than-ideal set of teeth. It’s not at all difficult to improve them.
Dyker Heights Root Canal
Tooth pain is no fun, and needs the type of attentive and gentle care that we are known for here at Fifth Avenue Dental Associates. When the reason behind a toothache is that the pulp inside the tooth has become inflamed or infected, the solution is Dyker Heights root canal therapy. It’s a method that has taken undue criticism. The truth is that it relieves the pain you’re in. It is not the cause of additional pain. Most patients report very little to no discomfort at all. This essential procedure is typically the only thing standing between you and a lost tooth, so it’s important that you take prompt action.
Why does your tooth’s pulp become inflamed or infected? Teeth are equipped with protective barriers in the form of your enamel and dentin layers, which act to keep out bacteria. When your tooth is decayed to the point of having a large enough cavity, an existing filling loosens or falls out, or you sustain a chipped or cracked tooth, those layers are breached. Bacteria gets inside, and that’s where the real trouble begins. You are likely to experience pain, possibly severe, when you chew or apply pressure to the tooth. It is also common to have sensitivity to hot and cold foods and beverages. You might notice gum tenderness or tooth discoloration, as well. The point of our Dyker Heights root canal is to remove the injured pulp and the nerve next to it, clean the canals and disinfect them. The canals are then sealed. When the tooth heals, you will have impressions taken for a permanent crown to restore the tooth to full size. Our Dyker Heights root canal may take one or multiple sessions. Once done, your tooth should be as functional and durable as any other tooth.
At the first indication of one or more of the symptoms listed above, contact us right away to schedule an appointment. Our Dyker Heights root canal may be exactly the treatment your require.
